Jargon is often used poorly—both when biologists talk to arborists, and when arborists talk to clients. Visiting educator and arborist Levi O’Brien (@leviobrien_trees, Levi O’Brien Tree School) will show you how to make sense of these biological principles, for yourself and clients, and how to put an understanding of tree form and function into practice.
This program is intended for tree care and landscape professionals or others with previous horticulture experience.

Levi O’Brien, arborist and educator
Levi O’Brien first learned that he loves teaching people about trees while studying and teaching dendrology, entomology, and biology at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Biology. He continues to teach there and at the New York Botanical Garden, while pursuing a Master’s in Forest Pathology, and has also taught on the adult education faculty at the New York Botanical Garden since 2021. He is known for his public and private tree tours in New York City and nationally, as well as his online videos. His teaching reflects and is informed by his beginnings as an amateur entomologist; private agriculture, horticulture, nursery and landscaping projects; his work as a TRAQ ISA-certified arborist for the NYC Parks’ street tree program; and his limitless passion for Greenwood craft and wood material science.
