Introduction to Gardening with Native Plants

If you are interested in learning more about native plants, curious about their importance, and want to learn how to manage a native plant garden, this well-rounded introductory class is a great place to start. In this 3-hour session, attendees will take a deep dive into the native flora of the Midwest.

Participants will learn:

  • The historical and cultural significance of native plants
  • The ecological benefits of native plants
  • Some native plant identification and scientific classifications
  • Techniques used to manage native plants in a garden

Participants will leave this course empowered with plenty of resources to start a native plant garden in their own spaces.

This program meets in person at the Arboretum.

Katarina Holecek, ecological horticulturist

Katarina Holecek began her horticulture journey at the North Carolina Botanical Garden, a conservation garden. Shortly after graduating from UNC Chapel Hill with her bachelor’s degree in environmental science, she worked on the display horticulture team at The Morton Arboretum. Currently, she works as a horticulturist at the Lurie Garden and for Vivant Gardening Services. Holecek has always had a passion for the environment and is thrilled to be in a field where she can work hands-on in the garden and in the classroom to spread the joy of plants!

What to Know

This program meets indoors.

Bring a notebook, pencil, water bottle, and snack.

There will be a 10–15 minute break in the middle of the course session.
