Our modern food system puts a wall between us and the natural cycles that support us. We purchase food from the supermarket with no connection to how or where it was grown. When we are finished with it, our food waste is conveniently hauled away, freeing us from any concern about where it ends up. But all of this is an illusion—our food must come from somewhere, and likewise, our trash must go somewhere, too. Home composting breaks this illusion, gives us a greater awareness of our food, and unlocks the useful nature of food scraps.
In this introductory class, discover the basics of home composting. Bring all of your composting questions and come learn about local food systems, the circular economy, and how the simple act of composting can put you back in touch with the natural cycles we are all a part of.

Adam Schwartz, Compost Club engagement coordinator, The Urban Canopy
Adam Schwartz joined The Urban Canopy in November of 2025, but has been composting at home since 2011. He was an early adopter of the Collective Resource bucket-swap program and has experience working with neighbors and condominium boards to find ways to establish composting in urban communities and in rooftop gardens.
In his free time, he enjoys gardening in his tiny rooftop farm, bicycling along the Lakefront Trail, visiting farmers markets, and exploring local restaurants. Schwartz volunteers with the 48th Ward Green Council and Climate Reality Project Chicago Metro, is on the steering committee for the 48th Ward Neighbors for Justice, and is a member of the Community Composter Coalition.
