In this single-morning birdwatching workshop at The Morton Arboretum, learn how to find birds and how to keep track of your observations. Discuss birdwatching equipment, what to wear, and more.

This program will begin in the classroom with a short lesson on birding basics. Then, participants will stroll around the Arboretum to observe birds that inhabit Illinois all year. As you walk, you’ll learn key bird features for identification and how to match birds to their preferred food or habitat.

This program meets in person at the Arboretum.

All experience levels are welcome.

Nathan Hambel, wildlife interpreter, DuPage Wildlife Conservation Center

Nate Hambel is a wildlife interpreter at DuPage Wildlife Conservation Center in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, where he educates visitors about urban wildlife, the center’s resident animals, and the rehabilitation of injured animals. With a master’s degree in biology, Hambel is an avid birder and outdoors person, teaching classes and leading trips for the College of DuPage and other local organizations that help people connect with nature.

What to Know

This program meets outdoors. Check the forecast and dress for the weather.

All experience levels are welcome.

Bring a set of binoculars and a field guide, if you have them. A limited number of binoculars will be available to borrow.

Bring water. A snack, sunscreen, and insect repellent may also come in handy.
