Led by Marimacha Monarca Press, this workshop series centers queerness and migration, grief and relief, death and rebirth while engaging the outdoors as a community art studio. In this three-part art making series participants will use papermaking, piñata making, and storytelling to connect their collective histories to the natural environment to explore vulnerability and resiliency. At the end of this program, participants will be able to:
- Understand rasquachismo
- Identify importance of native seeds for pollinators
- Identify papier-mȃché techniques and their importance to Latine culture
- Make seed paper inspired by guerrilla gardening and rasquachismo
- Work collaboratively on collective art projects.
Join us in metamorphosis by spawning, transforming, and pollinating with a huge monarch-inspired piñata made with seed paper.

Marimacha Monarca Press
Marimacha Monarca Press is a queer, trans, POC (People of Color) collective of artists and educators based on the South Side of Chicago. They provide zine and printmaking workshops as a means of self-publication, communication, and reflection. A 2023 Ignite Fund grantee, they have collaborated with Chicago Public Schools, Chicago Park District, Neighbors for Environmental Justice, UIC Heritage Garden, XICX Zine Collective, Brown & Proud Press, and various other organizations and artist collectives. Working alongside themes of queerness, race, language, and storytelling, Marimacha Monarca Press hopes to inspire conversations that allow us to see the power of writing our histories.
