Sumi-e Brush Painting Workshop

Simplify a specimen into a few well-placed strokes with a minimalist approach to Asian ink and brush painting.

Content Detail

Sumi-e is the Japanese word for black ink painting, a style of art in which the brush strokes capture the spirit (Ch’i) of nature rather than a photographic likeness. Emphasis is placed on the beauty of each individual stroke of the brush.

In this workshop, students will view examples of the art form and then try their hand at a simple brush painting using photographs of flowers as inspiration. The focus of this class will be on “The Four Nobles”: bamboo, grass orchid, chrysanthemum, and plum blossoms.

This program meets in person at the Arboretum.

Course number: A124

Instructor

Satomi Kamei, artist

Satomi Kamei was born in Hiroshima, Japan—a city known both as a symbol of peace and a center for international art. Growing up with an art-loving mother, she was exposed to various art forms early on. After earning a BA in Japanese literature, she obtained teaching licenses in both literature and calligraphy. While working a desk job, she joined a watercolor club and was drawn to the medium’s purity and transparency.

Later, Kamei pursued a degree in studio art in the U.S., where she studied painting and figure drawing. Her background in calligraphy, especially the Gyosho and Sōsho styles, deepened her appreciation for expressive brushwork—something she now explores through sumi-e. Satomi also practices kana calligraphy, known for its poetic elegance.

From her roots in Hiroshima, she carries a deep wish for peace. Through gentle brushstrokes and quiet harmony, she hopes to offer viewers a sense of beauty and serenity.
