In this program, participants will learn
- how to identify target species that threaten our natural
- how to monitor and report invasive species on the Early Detection and Distribution Mapping System and
- how this program results in on-the-ground control of many early detection plant populations.
This program kicks off the Arboretum’s participation in Illinois Invasive Species Awareness Month, a statewide effort held each May to educate and inform citizens of Illinois about the threat of invasive species.
This program meets in person at the Arboretum.

Tricia Bethke is the forest pest outreach coordinator for the state of Illinois. Her position is funded through a cooperative grant with the US Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. Her responsibilities include statewide training of key stakeholders on invasive species, forest pest identification, regulations, and quarantines and reporting protocols. She also coordinates and instructs tree identification classes, pest detection programs, and tree health monitoring.
