Intro to Amigurumi: Crocheting Woodland Creatures

Stitch your way into the forest with your own handmade woodland friends.

Content Detail

Amigurumi are small crocheted stuffed characters, which you may have seen showing up everywhere right now, from social media feeds to craft fairs and gift shops. In this class, you will learn the basics of crocheting these playful three dimensional forms while building a strong foundation in crochet.

Whether you are brand new to crochet or looking to expand your skills, instructor Dave Hodge will guide you step by step through the essential stitches used in nearly all amigurumi projects, including single crochet, single crochet increase, and single crochet decrease.

The class will cover:

  • Creating basic shapes such as spheres and cylinders
  • Placement of eyes and attaching arms and legs
  • Adding details and embellishments like hair and leaves

Using these techniques, you will create a woodland-inspired character, such as an animal, plant, or mushroom, while gaining the skills needed to continue exploring this popular crochet style on your own.

Supply List

Please bring the following supplies.

Worsted-weight yarn

Check that the yarn band recommends a size H hook.

Avoid black, white, or very dark or very light yarns, as these can be difficult for beginners.

Size G and F crochet hooks

Letters refer to diameter of hooks (G=4.5mm; F=4mm)

For amigurumi, using a smaller hook than the yarn label suggests creates a tighter fabric that prevents stuffing from showing.

Scissors

Yarn needle
