Learn the basic principles of garden design and create a design for your space in this introductory-level class at The Morton Arboretum. With a mix of lecture and workshop time, you will:
- learn garden design terminology.
- analyze the characteristics of a well-designed garden, including how to group plants aesthetically based on plant size, form, color, and bloom time.
- explore a variety of garden styles.
- build environmental sustainability into your design.
- create an inventory of your property, perform a garden style analysis, and generate a plant list.
- create your own design drawing for a section of your garden.

Heather Prince is a trained horticulturist specializing in trees, shrubs, and native plants. She has been a part of the green industry for more than 20 years in numerous facets from public to private. She currently balances a busy freelance writing and teaching schedule with her role as email marketing manager for The Garden of Words. She firmly believes anyone can garden and everyone will fall in love with plants given the chance.
What to Know
This program meets mostly indoors. Some sessions will include visits to garden spaces on the grounds of the Arboretum.
Before class, get to know your home landscape, noting the amount of sun and water that different areas receive.
