Hydrangeas are long-blooming shrubs and have become one of the hottest must-have plants for your yard. Their big, beautiful blossoms, ease of planting, and decorative dried flower heads make hydrangeas a favorite for home landscapes. In this class, participants will
- explore heirloom favorites and the hottest new cultivars,
- discuss the siting, care, and pruning requirements of each of the five shrub species and two vines commonly planted in the Chicago area, and
- head out to the gardens to experience each of the types up close and in person.
For the new and experienced gardener alike, hydrangeas are a thrilling addition to the home landscape.

Heather Prince is a trained horticulturist specializing in trees, shrubs, and native plants. She has been a part of the green industry for more than 20 years in numerous facets from public to private. She currently balances a busy freelance writing and teaching schedule with her role as email marketing manager for The Garden of Words. She firmly believes anyone can garden and everyone will fall in love with plants given the chance.
What to Know
This program meets indoors and outdoors. Weather permitting, we will spend extended time outdoors.
Check the forecast and dress for the weather. Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothes.
Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes and plan to walk more than a mile on uneven terrain.
Bring sunscreen and insect repellent.
Bring a notebook, pen, and water.
