As Tree Conservation Biology program manager, Emma Leavens makes the knowledge and tools of conservation biology accessible.
Leavens works to build capacity for the monitoring of biodiversity, promoting collaboration between practitioners, researchers, and policymakers, by sharing tools and research findings with partners managing ecosystems in the Chicago region and around the world.
Emma’s previous research investigated the mycorrhizal fungal community and population genetics of Comandra umbellata, a key species of high-quality prairies. In earlier roles at The Morton Arboretum, Leavens investigated above and below ground plant communities to learn how prairie ecosystems function by maintaining the Ware Field Experimental Prairie, coordinating a study of root traits of prairie species, and supporting research on the soil factors and communities associated with those species.
Through classes, presentations, and mentorship, she aims to build bridges between conservation science and stewardship practices with the aim of maximizing the capacity of both to conserve and protect biodiversity.
