Event Organizers

Black People Outside (BPO)

At BPO, Chevy and Kam understand the need for representation and comfort when trying new experiences. As city dwellers themselves, they realized the lack of diversity in outdoor spaces and made it their mission to change that. Through engaging short-form videos on social media and arranging free group hikes in Chicago, they aim to make the great outdoors just as appealing as the city and break down barriers for urban communities to explore and discover nature.

Their journey began during the pandemic lockdown, when travel restrictions forced them to seek adventure closer to home. That’s when they took a chance and went camping in Grand Teton National Park. The stunning landscape left them inspired, but also aware of the lack of diversity in most outdoor spaces. BPO was born from their desire to share their experiences in the outdoors and encourage others to join them. They use social media to spread the word and build a community of outdoor enthusiasts, united by their love for adventure and diversity. Follow them on Instagram at @blk.people.outside and @bpo.hikes.
