Join photographer and environmental scientist Peter Vagt for a photographic journey of the Arboretum across decades and seasons.

Content Detail

Join photographer and environmental scientist Peter Vagt for a photographic journey of the Arboretum across decades and seasons.

Peter Vagt has compiled twenty years of his color photography into a new book celebrating The Morton Arboretum, Light Through the Trees: Photographs of The Morton Arboretum (University of Illinois Press, August 2022). During this evening program, the photographer will share stories behind many photographs in the book, examine why the Arboretum became his creative muse and a source of serenity,  and explore the creative process of capturing meaning through nature photography.

As the Arboretum celebrates its centennial, Peter Vagt’s close attention to place and time captures the profound connections people have with the Arboretum and its role as a sanctuary for anyone in search of transcendence in nature.

Copies of Light Through the Trees will be available for purchase. A Q&A session and book signing to follow.

Peter Vagt

Peter Vagt is an environmental scientist and a landscape photographer. For more than 20 years, he found his landscape muse at The Morton Arboretum.

His patient photographic eye offers the transcendent beauty he finds, in simple tree scenes and along the shore of a small pond or on the bank of a small stream. It is tempting to think that we need grand landscapes like Yosemite or the Big Sur coast to experience nature. These photos show that the beauty and wonder of nature are available on a walk through a Midwestern woodland or in a flourish of last year’s grass still standing on the edge of a prairie.
