Japanese Juniper Workshop (in person)

This beginner to intermediate class will feature Juniperus procumbens, a type of Japanese bonsai tree.

Content Detail

This beginner to intermediate class will feature the Japanese bonsai, Juniperus procumbens. The primary focus of this workshop will be what to look for in creating bonsai, including design and wiring. The trees featured are in 1-gallon pots and have three-quarter-inch to 1-inch trunks. The goal of this class is to come away with a tree that has its first initial styling and is on its way to becoming a bonsai.

This program meets on-site at the Arboretum.

Health and Safety: Program participants must abide by the Arboretum’s health and safety guidelines. Guidelines are subject to change, so please check back frequently.


  • Supplies: Price includes a Japanese Juniper. Material selection is by lottery drawing
  • Students are asked to bring in what tools they have on hand. Extra tools will be provided by Prairie State. Limit 10

Jennifer Price

Jennifer Price discovered bonsai 12 years ago after retiring from the stage as a professional ballerina. She has apprenticed with Walter Pall.  For the last several years she continues to be involved in an intensive study program with Walter Pall in Germany as well as working with Ryan Neil here in the USA. She has taught workshops and given demonstrations worldwide and was part of Generation Bonsai in Germany and represented America at an international bonsai convention in Shanghai, China
