This workshop features a selection of Chinese elm trees.

Content Detail

This workshop features a selection of Chinese elm trees and will explore the many possibilities of the chuhin bonsai, with its smaller size requiring less space and time for the overall design.

Chinese elms are strong, adaptable, fast-growing trees with small textured leaves perfect for the beginner or the experienced student.  Students will learn design principles as well as how to select and prune branches to develop the desired shape for your tree. The instructor will provide seasonal tips so that your tree will stay healthy for years to come. All skill levels are welcome.

This program meets on-site at the Arboretum.

Health and Safety: Program participants must abide by the Arboretum’s health and safety guidelines. Guidelines are subject to change, so please check back frequently.


  • Supplies: Price includes Fukien Tea tree. Material selection is by lottery drawing
  • Students are asked to bring in what tools they have on hand. Extra tools will be provided by Prairie State.
  • Limit of 10 participants.

Jim Beck

Jim Beck has been involved in bonsai for more than 35 years. He is the co-owner of BC Bonsai and has been leading workshops for more than 15 years. BC Bonsai has won many ribbons and nationally judged shows at the professional level.
