In this beginner’s bonsai workshop, students will learn to style and wire their own Brazilian rain tree to take home.
Chloroleucon tortum syn. Pithecellobium tortum, commonly known as Brazilian rain tree, is a tropical plant native to Brazil and Paraguay.
Brazilian rain tree is a very popular bonsai species—hardy and fast-growing—that is great for African-style flat top bonsai and many other styles. It produces gorgeous, vibrant compound foliage that closes up at night and when it rains. The trunk flutes as the tree matures, and has a naturally exfoliating bark. Brazilian rain tree is a tropical plant that should be kept away from freezing temperatures and moved inside before nighttime temperatures are below 50 degrees. It prefers full to partial sun, moderate water, and moderate fertilizer.
This bonsai workshop will focus on initial styling and wiring of the Brazilian rain tree. Care instructions will be included. All skill levels are welcome.
This program meets in person at The Morton Arboretum and is presented by the Prairie State Bonsai Society in conjunction with the Arboretum’s Destination Asia Festival and Bonsai Show on Saturday, August 2, and Sunday, August 3.
