The Morton Arboretum seeks to balance the needs of all living things within its natural areas and tree collections. These collections include rare and irreplaceable plants susceptible to damage from deer overpopulation in an increasingly urbanized area. In operation since 1984, the Arboretum’s deer management program operates under the authority, guidance, and strict regulation of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). The Arboretum has extensively tested other options to protect these valuable plants, none of which were entirely successful in reducing plant damage.

Deer removal is only conducted when the grounds are closed to ensure the safety of employees and guests. The Arboretum partners with regional food pantries to donate all venison from the program. For more information about Illinois deer management programs, please visit the IDNR website.
