Shrubs are a durable and important component of planted landscapes.
Correct pruning and maintenance is essential to keeping shrubs and landscapes looking their best each year. This hands-on class will dig deep into how these foundational plants operate so gardeners and landscapers can make good care choices and enjoy them for years. This class at The Morton Arboretum will examine the care needs and management requirements for three of the most popular species of shrub in the Midwest.
Students will learn:
- How and when to prune different species of shrub
- Whether or not fertilization is necessary
- How to identify and respond to common pests and disease
- Other science-backed tips for caring for long-lived shrubs
The class will include an outdoor walk on the Arboretum grounds to view shrub varieties up close as well as a pruning demonstration and hands-on practice of pruning techniques.
Each session will cover a different genus or group of shrubs. Participants may register for one or all three.
