Arboretum Friends and Supporters,
Today marks the beginning of The Morton Arboretum’s yearlong centennial celebration. The year ahead carries special significance and opportunities to take part in all that is planned.
What Arboretum founder Mr. Joy Morton envisioned as a “great outdoor museum of trees” is truly magnificent today. It is a place to encounter, admire, conserve, and study one of the world’s greatest wonders—trees! On December 14, 1922, he signed the trust indenture establishing The Morton Arboretum as an organization focused on tree collections, research, and learning. We can all be grateful for his foresight and significant investment in trees, recognizing their vital importance to society.
The Arboretum has grown and flourished in its first 100 years. Today we stand under the shade of strong, towering trees planted a century ago. The Arboretum is firmly rooted in its continuing mission to plant and protect trees for a greener, healthier, and more beautiful world.
Thank you for your support of the Arboretum and its mission. As a loyal supporter, you help advance the cause of trees, connect your friends and family with this cherished place of enjoyment, and propel tree science and conservation.
The Arboretum’s future will be guided by its mission and strategic focus on trees, climate, sustainability, and inclusion. In its second century, the Arboretum will grow its impact, working with partners throughout the region and world.
I invite you to join in the many festivities to come. One hundred centennial programs and events are planned, The Grand Garden will open next September, and more than 1,000 trees will be planted throughout the Chicago region.
With special gratitude for your support of the Arboretum,
Gerard T. Donnelly, PhD
