In this beginner’s bonsai workshop, students will learn to style and wire their own green gem ficus tree to take home.
Ficus macrocarpa, commonly known as green gem ficus, is native to tropical Asia, the West Pacific islands, and Australia. It has since been introduced to many parts of North and Central America.
Green gem ficus is a hardy tree that is particularly well-suited for banyan-style bonsai. It can be grown indoors and outdoors in the summer months in Illinois, developing beautiful pads and aerial roots. Green gem ficus has tiny, rounded leaves with a waxy texture. Under the right conditions, the tree can produce ornamental fig fruits. Green gem ficus prefers full to partial sun and moderate water and fertilizer. As a tropical tree, it must be moved inside before nighttime temperatures are below 50 degrees.
This bonsai workshop will focus on initial styling and wiring of the green gem ficus tree. Care instructions will be included. All skill levels are welcome.
This program meets in person at The Morton Arboretum and is presented by the Prairie State Bonsai Society in conjunction with the Arboretum’s Destination Asia Festival and Bonsai Show on Saturday, August 2, and Sunday, August 3.
