Discover the amazing world of magnolias with Matt Lobdell, head of collections and curator at the Arboretum and vice president of Magnolia Society International. In this unforgettable afternoon, learn about the magnolia’s rich history and deep evolutionary roots as you venture out on a hike to explore the trees within the Arboretum’s extensive nationally accredited magnolia collection. Appreciate the wide diversity of magnolias; learn of the history and diagnostic features of both common and rare magnolias; learn of their adaptiveness to the Chicago region climate; and find out what is being done to protect magnolia diversity today. Walk away with an expanded appreciation of magnolias and new ideas for how to add their large flowers, large leaves, elegant colors, and exotic scents to any garden.

Held entirely outdoors.  Participants should be prepared to walk two miles over wood-chipped trails and uneven terrain. Limit 25

Matt Lobdell, curator and head of living collections, The Morton Arboretum

Matt Lobdell has served as head of collections and curator of The Morton Arboretum since 2014, where he is responsible for the development of the Arboretum’s plant collections. He holds a M.S. in plant and soil science from the University of Delaware, and he is a member of Magnolia Society International’s board of directors.
